Local optimism in Malibu

Local optimism in Malibu

We teamed up with Madhappy to design their new store in Malibu’s Cross-Creek Ranch. The LA-born brand is built around an ideology of ‘local optimism’ expressed through apparel, events and experimental retail spaces. This store channels the tonality and light of Malibu in an expression of West Coast energy. We drew inspiration from the post-war Case Study houses: glass, steel and concrete: open-plan design for social interaction. A heavy rocky surface framing the rails of apparel brings the elemental ruggedness of the surrounding landscape inside.

Cubed display plinths in stainless steel and plywood nod towards American art titan Donald Judd’s simple, functional geometric forms. The bespoke inward-facing sofa in Madhappy’s signature pastel blue is the centrepiece of the conversation area, bathed here in California sunlight. This is a local expression of the global brand’s whimsical-yet-sophisticated aesthetic and uplifting vibe.
