Creative agency LBi took over the Atlantis Building, part of the historic Truman Brewery in east London, to become their UK head office. The vast Victorian industrial building required a respectful transformation to function effectively as a design studio for the company’s 500 staff.
The architectural approach taken shifted the building’s planes, adding and taking away where necessary, and scaling the formidable structure into more usable proportions. Large sections of the front and side façade were replaced with structural glass planks to allow in more natural light, and part of the ground floor was opened up to welcome daylight into the basement. Mezzanine levels suspended within the most cavernous spaces created workable studios while flexible meeting spaces and social areas were inserted into pockets throughout the building.
