Unearthing an imaginative domestic retreat
Unearthing an imaginative domestic retreat
We transformed a de-commissioned water reservoir into a family home for artist Dinos Chapman and knitwear designer Tiphaine de Lussy.
It’s the second time we’ve collaborated with Chapman, who described partnering with Brinkworth director Kevin Brennan as ‘like working with my brother making art, only on paper’. Following the conversion of their East London property 15 years earlier, this latest project repurposes the reservoir, dissecting and inserting spaces within existing gridded bays. The 7500sq.ft. site in rural Kent centres around the 1930s concrete shell and columned framework that emerged after excavation.
Rear bedrooms face onto a lap pool hidden behind banked earth, while open living spaces with expansive views are crowned by a steel and glass pavilion. The home is designed to evolve along with its environment, with planting slowly blending the building back into the landscape.
