Moving work for iconic art museum
Over several years, Brinkworth have designed a series of furniture units for the world-renowned art institution Tate.
Initially, we were commissioned to create mobile retail units which could travel around Tate Modern to assist visitor engagement and eliminate customer congestion in the main shop. In response, we designed “The Kiosk” – a moveable, modular shop that responds to the gallery's instantly recognisable aesthetic. Adaptability and functionality are at the core of the design, the kiosk features interchangeable elements such as a free-standing table that can slot into the main structure, flexible shelves that alter display proportions, and apertures which draw the eye. The unit can be presented either as one singular piece or separated to create two modular units.
Next up we designed smaller mobile units aimed at young visitors with low storage boxes doubling up as seats, allowing the young ones to sit and read or be read to. More recently we have designed a jewellery counter for the mezzanine shop as well as a set of easily portable information stations which can be moved around to alleviate congestion in the central areas.
Whilst most of our work has been for Tate Modern in London, we have also designed furniture for the shop in Tate St Ives, which draws on a different design language, incorporating bright colours and gentle curves for the seaside location.
